Police name teenager who died in Pontefract crash

A teenager who died after her car crashed into a stream in Pontefract has been named by police.

Sophie Bywater, from Collingham, near Leeds, died after veering off Skinner Lane and crashing into a stream at around 2.30am on Saturday morning.

The 19-year-old, who was the sole occupant of the white Volkswagen Polo, was taken to Pinderfields Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Det Sgt Carole Greaves, of the police Major Collision Enquiry Team, said: “From initial enquiries there is nothing to indicate that any other vehicle was involved.

“A young woman has lost her life and we would urge anyone who has any information which could aid our enquiries to contact the Major Collision Enquiry Team on 101.”
