Update on Fire Strike as row over pensions continues

Members of the Fire Brigades Union walked out at 9am in a bitter dispute over pensions, and will hold a further stoppage from 10am-5pm on Saturday, June 21.

Bosses at West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said contingency are in place and 27 fire engines were providing cover around the county.

They recieved 38 calls in the first eight hours of today’s strike, but many were false alarms or minor incidents.

Call-outs included a garden fire in Wakefield and a building fire which spread to a building in Castleford.

Assistant chief fire officer Dave Walton said: “We sincerely appreciate the efforts that people have gone to in order to safeguard themselves and their families during this period.

“However, we are mindful that it has been a very sunny day and spirits may be high as the first World Cup game kicks off this evening.

“If you are planning a barbecue to celebrate, please remember that cooking and alcohol do not mix.

“Never use flammable fuels to ignite a barbecue. Stick to approved fire lighters instead.”
