Highways England said that drivers would benefit from "major safety improvements", including a new safety barrier, on a stretch of the road between Redhouse and Barnsdale Bar.

As part of the work, overnight closures will be in place on the A1 later this week.

“To carry out this work safely and with minimum disruption we’ll need to use a variety of closures at different times.

“Occasional overnight closures will take place on the A1 between Redhouse and Barnsdale Bar to install and remove the traffic management equipment needed to carry out this work.

"We will also need to close the entry and exit slip roads overnight at Barnsdale Bar, Skellow and Redhouse when work is taking place on those sections of the main carriageway.

“We want to thank drivers for their patience while we carry out this work.”

A first closure will take place on the southbound A1 between Barnsdale Bar and Redhouse on Wednesday, February 19 and Thursday, February 20.

The closure will be in place from 8pm to 6am, and will also involve the closure of a number of side roads.

From Friday, February 21, a lane closure will be in place on the same stretch of road. This will be enforced between 8pm and 6am, Monday to Friday, alongside a temporary speed limit of 50mph until work is completed in April.

Highways England said that all closures, side road restrictions and diversions had been agreed with local authorities and the police, and would be clearly signed in advance.
