Tributes to Jake Hartley, one of six soldiers believed killed in blast

The MOD said today that the former Dewsbury pupil, 20, is missing, believed killed.

He was on a mounted patrol with four others from his battalion and a soldier from 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment when the Warrior armoured vehicle he was travelling in was caught in an explosion.

Earlsheaton Technology College assistant headteacher Anne Lyons, Cpl Hartley’s former head of year, said he had wanted a career in the army from an early age.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to Jake’s family and friends at this tragic time,” she said. “As a school community we will always remember him with pride.”

Dozens of tributes have been made on social networking sites since news of the explosion.

The MOD said they had spoken to the families of the men yesterday, and many of the messages online were of condolence.

Tom Swailes said: “Thoughts go out to all soldiers that lost their lives today and a friend, Jake Hartley, who lost his life fighting for our country.”

Jakee Gibson said: “Didn’t even make 21. Heart goes out to his family.”

Keith Mason said: “RIP to my boy and best mate who was killed in the call of duty today in Afghan. True soldier. RIP Jake Hartley x.”

The other soldiers from 3rd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment have been named as Pte Anthony Frampton, 20; Pte Christopher Kershaw, 20; Pte Daniel Wade, 20; Pte Daniel Wilford, 21.

The soldier from 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment has been named as Sgt Nigel Coupe, 33.
