FORMER Mayor of Wakefield Kenneth Bolland has died after a short illness at the age of 84.
The grandfather was Mayor of Wakefield from 1996-97 and a councillor in his home town ward, Glass Houghton in Castleford, from 1986 to 1997.
Wakefield Council leader Coun Peter Box added: “I was saddened to hear of Ken’s death. He was a very hard working local councillor and an excellent mayor.
“On behalf of the council I send our sympathies to his family and friends at this difficult time.”
Mr Bolland’s friend, the current mayor of Wakefield Tony Wallis, said: “Ken was not just my colleague but also a good friend. It was because of him that I entered politics.
“He would try his best to help others, an excellent example to follow. He was one of those I did not hesitate to turn for advice.”
Mr Bolland, who previously worked at Glass Houghton colliery, leaves his wife, Margaret.
A funeral service is due to be held at Trinity Methodist Church in Castleford at 2pm today, followed by cremation at Pontefract Crematorium at 3pm. Donations will be collected for Pontefract’s Prince of Wales Hospice in lieu of flowers.
