Two knifepoint robberies in Pontefract at the weekend

Two people were robbed at knifepoint in Pontefract at the weekend.

A 54-year-old man was slashed by a robber after being threatened with a knife in Valley Gardens, Friarwood Lane, at 10pm on Saturday.

The victim was cut after he tried to grab the robber, who demanded cash. The victim fled down a ginnel but the suspect chased him and threatened him again.

Then the suspect left after stealing a small amount of the cash from the victim.

On Sunday at 7.20am a woman was robbed at knifepoint in a car park in Halfpenny Lane.

She was stopped by a man who threatened her with a knife and demanded her handbag. The man fled after stealing her bag.

Det Insp Steve Greenbank of Wakefield CID, said: “We are investigating both of these robberies and are appealing for information. I wish to stress that knifepoint robberies such as these are unusual for Pontefract and that a number of enquiries are underway.

“These were distressing incidents for both victims. The incidents are similar and we are not ruling out the offender may be responsible for both offences.”

The Valley Gardens suspect is described as white, between 30 and 40-years-old, with short cropped hair and a beard.

He was wearing a white Umbro tracksuit top and had a tattoo on his right hand.

The second suspect is described as white, in his 20s or 30s, with a one-inch scruffy ginger beard.

He was wearing a black hat and a waterproof jacket.
