United heroes take to the pitch for poorly tot

Former Leeds United stars Terry Yorath and Noel Whelan will be tying up their boot laces on Sunday to take on a group of lads and dads to raise funds for little Betsy Kay - Mr Yorath’s great-niece.

Betsy has been diagnosed with Mitrochondrial Disease, a condition that means the tot had a thickened heart muscle and high amounts of acid in her blood. The family has just discovered she now needs a new heart.

Battle will commence at Bruntcliffe Academy on Sunday - which will also be Betsy’s second birthday.

Mr Yorath will be making up the celebrity team with Noel Whelan joining the opposition team, Chip and Ale, a group of friends committed to raising awareness and funds for Betsy’s condition.

Glenn Miller, captain of team Chip and Ale, said: “Last year I formed the group, which is a fearless team of lads, dads and best mates to tackle challenges and raise funds and awareness. This year, Betsy’s dad Paddy and his uncle, Terry Yorath, have challenged us to match on Sunday - Mother’s Day and Betsy’s birthday. We hope to make it a special day for her and I think there will be a lot of big strong men reduced to tears on the day.”

The match, and family fun day will start at 2pm-4pm. Entry is £2 for adults and it is free for children.

People are then welcome from 4.30pm at Bruntcliffe WMC where a raffle with more than 50 prizes will be held and snacks served.
