Detectives are continuing to question a 21-year-old man on suspicion of murder.
A 31-year-old man was found dead on a balcony on Smirthwaite View, Normanton, during the early hours of Sunday morning.
Police were called to a disturbance at around 3.30am.
Officers were confronted by a man armed with knives on the first floor balcony.
A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “The body of a man could also been seen on the same balcony.
“The armed man made threats to officers and prevented the emergency services getting to the apparently fatally injured man.
“Negotiations commenced and the body was recovered at 4:09am. The suspect was then arrested at 4:24am.”
The suspect, who is believed to be from the Normanton area, was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.
A detailed forensic examination of the flat and balcony was carried out yesterday.
Witnesses said the man was shouting at the police and threw a television from the balcony before he was arrested.
