A 49-year-old woman has died after being rescued from a flat fire in East Ardsley last night (Sunday).

Crews from Hunslet and Morley were called to the property in Greenwood Road at 9.25pm and found the whole of the first floor flat involved in the fire.

Watch manager Anthony Thorp, of Hunslet Fire Station, said: “There was smoke coming out of all the windows and lots of members of the public were on the street when we arrived.

“Nobody was sure whether anyone was inside, so we had to assume there was. To release some of the smoke we had to break a lot of the windows so it was safe for our crews to go in.

“Four breathing apparatus wearers went in do a search of the flat and fight the fire.

“After about five to ten minutes of us being at the scene we found a woman inside the flat and pulled her out. She was unconscious and not breathing and firefighters carried out CPR.”

Ambulance crews arrived soon after and the woman was taken to Pinderfields Hospital, where she later died. The last crew left the scene at around 2.30am this morning.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but enquiries are ongoing and a fire investigation officer will attend the scene today.
