Crews from the town’s fire station were called to Knottingley Road at the junction with Cobblers Lane after reports of motorists stuck in flood waters.

Watch commander John Cavalier said: “The water was so deep that cars were cutting out and people were left stranded.

“It was also flowing really fast and raising manhole covers so the other fear was that the water would take people from underneath if they got out.”

Police and firefighters cordoned off the area while the flood waters subsided.

The road is now reopen.
