UPDATED - Gritters on standby after snow alert issued for Wakefield district

Snow could fall across the district tonight (Monday) as wet and wintry showers sweep across the country.

The Met Office said there could be light snow and sleet overnight and tomorrow (Tuesday).

It has issued a yellow ‘be aware’ warning and drivers have been told to expect disruption.

Showers are expected to fall on ground above 100m tonight before snow is possible even at lower grounds on Tuesday.

The Met Office said: “The colder air will extend further south during Tuesday with snow falling to progressively lower levels across northern England.

“The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to transport.”

Wakefield Council said it was monitoring weather forecasts and urged people to take extra care.

Coun David Dagger, cabinet member for transport and highways, said: “We are carefully monitoring the weather forecast and our teams are on standby throughout the night to respond as necessary. Drivers are urged to carefully plan journeys where possible using the gritting network details which can be found on the Council’s website. In addition updates will be provided on the Council’s Twitter page.”
