BAFTA award-winning Mr Godber, from Upton, will make a rare appearance on stage next month in a special performance of his play, Bouncers.

The tweaked version of his 1977 play, based on former Kikos nightclub in Pontefract, is part of the theatre’s Annual Variety Performance, to mark its 120th anniversary.

Mr Godber said: “What we call bouncers may have changed and what we wear may have changed but the reality is that people still want to go out and have a good night.

“Being from Upton, I did a lot of my going out in Pontefract when I was young .

“I was usually unsuccessful in picking up women so I had a lot of time to watch other people doing it and that’s where the play came from.”

The anniversary lineup will include comedian Billy Pearce and The Voice finalists Frances Wood and Sophie May Williams.

The play has been performed at venues across the country and Mr Godber said it has helped publicise the region.

Mr Godber said:“The play has taken the name of Wakefield all over the country, it’s fantastic for the region.”

The event will be held on February 13 and a black tie Anniversary Gala Dinner will take place at Unity Hall before the show.
