Plans to reorganise services at hospitals in Dewsbury, Wakefield and Pontefract were referred to Jeremy Hunt by councillors in October.

Members of a Wakefield and Kirklees joint health scrutiny committee said they were not convinced the changes were in the best interest of patients.

Yesterday (Wednesday) an independent panel tasked with reviewing the Mid Yorkshire Hospital Trust’s proposals on behalf of the government reported back to Mr Hunt.

Its recommendations have not been made public, and Mr Hunt will now take 30 days consider whether the plans can proceed

The plans include downgrading Dewsbury and District Hospital’s A&E and centralising some children’s and maternity services at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.

Pinderfields would become the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trusts major centre for emergency and acute care, with Dewsbury and Pontefract focusing on outpatient care and planned surgery.

Both hospitals would still offer accident and emergency services, but would deal with less serious injuries and illnesses.
