Video: Castleford Bus Station in running for national award

Castleford Bus Station, which opened in February after a major £6m revamp, has been named as a finalist in the UK Bus Awards.

The facility is used by around 12,000 people every day and has improved waiting areas, electronic departure information and passenger help points for commuters.

It was developed by West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) and has been shortlisted in the Local Authority Bus Project of the Year category.

Coun Peter Box, chairman of WYCA and Wakefield Council leader, said: “I’m delighted that Castleford Bus Station has been shortlisted for this prestigious national award.

“I live in Castleford and have received some very positive feedback about the project, which is an example of what can be achieved by district councils, in this case my own Wakefield Council, and the Wet Yorkshire Combined Authority working together.

“Everyone is immensely proud of the new Bus Station and it’s given Castleford a great lift”.

The bus station officially opened on February 22 after a year-long project which included demolishing the town’s old bus station on the site.

The new facility now has 24-hour monitored CCTV coverage, a retail outlet and toilet and baby changing facilities.

Liam Needham, Castleford and Pontefract Bus Stations manager, said: “Castleford has a great bus station as a result of great teamwork and being shortlisted for this award is recognition of what has been achieved.”
