A FLOOD alert has been issued for the River Calder.

The Environment Agency issued the warning as water levels continued to rise throughout the day as the city was hit by heavy rain showers and hail stones.

Firefighters from Wakefield Fire Station have inspected the water levels close to the Hepworth gallery and Chantry Bridge.

Firefighter Kevin Sutcliffe said: “I would say it’s almost about to burst its banks.”
