Wakefield cathedral verger not guilty of sex attack

A WAKEFIELD Cathedral verger who was accused of “groping” a woman before a service has been found not guilty by a jury.

The jury of eight women and four men took less than 30 minutes to acquit Nicholas Whitaker, 34, of the offence of sexual assault today at Leeds Crown Court. (Friday.)

Mr Whitaker, of Richmond Road, St John’s, did not wish to comment after the swift verdict.

It had been alleged that Mr Whitaker, a verger at Wakefield Cathedral, approached the woman from behind as she spoke to another verger at the cathedral, putting his arms around her and fondling her breasts.

He maintained that he had “no reason to touch her breasts” and that was certainly not his intention. Mr Whitaker described it as “brief hug from behind”.
