A POWER cut caused chaos at city centre shops today (Monday).

Businesses and banks were forced to close after they were left without electricity due to a faulty underground cable.

Thirty seven properties on Northgate, the Bull Ring and Cross Square were all affected by the cut.

Supplier CE Electric UK was made aware of the fault at 6.30am and managed to get 29 shops re-connected after lunch.

Eight properties still remain powerless and are likely to do so for the rest of the day.

A spokesman for CE Electric UK said: “We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused to our customers and they can be assured our technicians will not leave the site until everyone is back on.”

Four shops are expected to be re-connected before 6pm, but the remaining four properties may have to wait until tomorrow (Tuesday) morning.
