Wakefield College backs science and apprenticeships weeks

Scientist and mathematicians of the future got a taste of science in action at Wakefield College this week.

Year 8 and 9 students from Wakefield City Academy learned about topics like DNA, imaging and maths in a crime scene as part of National Science Week.

The project is part of a wider effort to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM) subjects to encourage more young people to study them at college and university.

Partnerships manager James Pennington said: “We’re delighted to have welcomed students from Wakefield City Academy to our STEM Taster Day as part of National Science Week. The academy is one of our key partner schools and this is the latest in a series of collaborations to give students a taste of college life.

“Our staff challenged students to build on existing knowledge with some exciting hands-on activities and experiments which everyone enjoyed!”

National Science Week, which runs until Sunday, is a UK-wide programme of events and activities. It is aimed at people of all ages and celebrates science, technology, engineering and maths.

The college has also been busy promoting National Apprenticeship Week. It has staged various events, including the college’s inaugural apprenticeships awards at Unity Works on Monday.

Former apprentices were also highlighted on a ‘where are they now’ feature on its website. Today (Friday) staff will open up the Apprenticeship Shop on Union Street for visitors to find out about the wide choice of opportunities available.

Staff at the college will also be showcasing the first success of the new Apprenticeship Shop, which resulted in a visitor to the shop landing a job with a local estate agents.

John Eastwood, head of apprenticeships at Wakefield College, said: “We were delighted to have hosted our first ever apprenticeships awards ceremony where we recognised the success of both apprentices and employers that work with us. National Apprenticeships Week is the perfect opportunity to showcase the great benefits of an apprenticeship and we’re looking forward to all the exciting activities we have planned.”
