Wakefield Council to decide over gentleman’s club plan

Nightclub owner Kevin Spencer wants to open the Pussy Cat Lounge sexual entertainment venue above Tequila nightclub on Bank Street.

Councillors, Wakefield MP Mary Creagh and council leader Peter Box have all made objections against the club.

Coun Box said the venue was on a major route in the city, close to historic buildings like Unity Works and Theatre Royal Wakefield.

He said: “Families leaving these premises late at night should not be subject to the atmosphere that such an establishment can create.”

Mr Spencer, who has five years experience running gentleman’s clubs and has owned multiple nightclubs around Westgate, has applied for a licence to open the club from 11pm until 4.30am on Thursday to Monday inclusive.

Speaking to the Express earlier this year, he said: “Wakefield has had gentleman’s bars before and this is an ideal location in the heart of the city’s clubs and bars but down a side street with no passing trade.”

Wakefield Council’s licensing committee will discuss the application at a meeting at County Hall, Bond Street, on Wednesday at 10am.

A report to the meeting said: “In considering an application such as this, the council has no right, and therefore will not, give regard to the morality of such establishments.”
