Wakefield Council is looking for more businesses and stallholders for when it moves the city’s outdoor market to the cathedral precinct.

Planning permission to move traders to the new site was approved in July after the council decided to sell the market hall to the owners of the nearby Trinity Walk shopping centre.

Indoor stallholders are expected to move into the Ridings shopping centre but have been delayed owing to the centre’s possible sale.

A date for both markets’ moves is yet to be set.

Coun Denise Jeffery, deputy leader and cabinet member for regeneration, said: “We are looking to get some new stallholders in to help the market thrive when it moves.

“New businesses would bring something fresh to the market and help attract more people.”

The outdoor market will see more than 50 stalls set up on the catherdral precinct, Northgate, Teall Street and Westmorland Street.

Coun Jeffery said: “While the plans for the outdoor market have been approved, we are conscious of the fact that the indoor market is struggling and if we were to move the outdoor one straight away it would isolate it.”
