Wakefield hairdresser Marcello is a cut above the rest

A city hairdresser has scooped a national award.

Marcello Moccia, the owner and creative director of the Room97 brand, was named as the North Western Hairdresser of the Year at a glitzy ceremony in London earlier this week.

The British Hairdressing Awards was co-hosted by comedian David Walliams at London’s glamorous Grosvenor House.

Mr Moccia, who runs the Room97 salon at Trinity Walk, said: “I can’t believe I’ve won this year, it feels incredible. It’s been a while since I’ve held one of these awards and it’s as exciting and humbling as the first time.

“I’m delighted not just for myself, but for the entire Room97 team. There’s an extra element of pride too when it comes to flying the flag for Wakefield and Yorkshire on a national level.”

A regional win at the awards can well and truly put a hairstylist on the map, securing their place as an authority, not just a creative visionary but as a ‘tastemaker’, an influential employer and a destination business which brings clients through the door.

Co-host Jayne Lewis-Orr, executive director of awards’ host Hairdressers Journal International, said: “This award cements Marcello as the North Western region’s leading hair talent, but a win doesn’t just mean you’re the very best in the area; it also marks you out as one of the greatest stylists in the country. This win positions you as an authority and puts Wakefield on the map too.”

The awards are now in their fourth decade, and have helped launch the careers of a host of household names, including John Frieda and Nicky Clarke.
