And the pair leave for Vancouver on Saturday before starting their challenge on Wednesday.

The route will see them leave Vancouver, pass through Tijuana, Baja and California before finishing in Mexico.

Mr Rimmer and his son will ride through tough terrain including thick evergreen forests, wide river canyons, grasslands and desert.

Tom, a year 10 pupil at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, said: “It is going to be very challenging as we’re carrying everything we need on the bikes. Most of the time we’ll be camping so I know I’ll need to eat a lot.”

Mr Rimmer is an experienced cyclist and rode across America from east to west in 2008.

The pair have been riding between 10 and 12 miles every evening to prepare for the challenge.

QEGS posted a message of support on their website.

It said: “The QEGS Community wish them all the very best for a successful and safe cycling adventure.”

The fundraiser coincided with the school’s annual event to raise money for Cancer Research UK and Teenage Cancer Trust.

QEGS launched the fundraiser in memory of pupil Alex Dawson, who lost his fight to bone cancer in 2007.

And Do It For Dawson campaign has raised more than £80,000 in seven years.

It has now been re-named Raise For Life to remember all the students and staff who have battled cancer and to celebrate those who have recovered.

And pupils from Wakefield Girls’ High School joined QEGS to raise money the charities at an event on Thursday, which included inflatables, karaoke competitions and stalls.

They also released balloons to remember those affected by the disease.
