Hundreds of runners are preparing to take part in Wakefield’s first marathon.

The charity day at Nostell Priory will include a full marathon race, a half-marathon race and a fun run.

And so far more than 400 people have signed up for Sunday’s event.

Organiser Wane Law, 43, from Team OA said: “All is going very well, we are excited at the moment, it’s going to be a long weekend for us.

“When we checked last weekend we had 237 for the half and 194 for the full and we have had a few more entries since then.”

Runners completing the full 26-miles can expect a multi-terrain two-lap route which starts and finishes in the grounds of Nostell Priory, where there will also be a family fun day taking place.

Along the way, runners will head down Garmil Lane onto Swine Lane then around to the Anglers’ Country Park.

The route then goes around Waterton Countryside Discovery Centre, past Wintersett Reservoir and the Cold Hiendley Reservoir.

It continues down Cold Hiendley Common Lane and through Ryhill and Havercroft before heading back up Swine Lane.

Organisers have tried to make the runs different, and have arranged water and feeding stations along the route.

Runners will also be kept entertained by a choir and a band singing running-themed songs.

The family fun day will include a climbing wall, zorbing, mini races and giant tennis.

There will also be refreshments available.

The family fun run starts at 10.30am and costs £3 per person. For more information on the event, go to wakefieldmar athon.co.uk
