Wakefield Trinity captain puts his shirt on eBay to help peregrine project

The second rower, who is an avid birdwatcher, has put the jersey he wore last season on the Internet auction site to help pay towards the costs of a webcam in the nest.

The auction ends at 8pm on Sunday and the home shirt has already reached its reserve price of £50.

The player has visited Wakefield Cathedral several times to keep an eye on the peregrine family. They began breeding there in 2015 after Wakefield Naturalists’ Society put a nest box up at the base of the spire. A web cam was added this year.

Mr Kirmond also attended the ringing of four young birds there last May when he told the Express: “To keep the camera going it is going to cost about £1,500 a year. I’ve got a keen interest in the peregrines and will do anything I can do to help.”

True to his word, the skipper has now offered Wakefield Naturalists his shirt for auction.

Project leader Francis Hickenbottom said: “Danny kindly offered us the shirt as a way of raising money for the webcam. When the camera runs live it costs about a £100 a month. It costs £67 a month when it is not live. In the future we want to keep it live all year. We will be tuning the camera on in February for six months when the male will start bringing in prey items to impress the female. We hope to have eggs in the nest by the beginning of April and chicks by early May. I’m hoping Danny’s shirt will pay for a month of streaming.”
