Wakefield Westgate is first rail station with bus display screen

The station is the first one in West Yorkshire to get the new screen installed by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

The display will allow travellers to find live bus departure times from stops close by, which will be shown on an electronic map.

It is part of an initiative to join up different forms of public transport.

Coun Peter Box, chairman of the WYCA and Wakefield Council leader, said: “I am pleased to see this latest addition to passenger information provision at Wakefield Westgate, shortly after the unveiling of our refurbishment of Kirkgate Station.

“We need to develop a modern transport network to underpin economic growth and job creation but we also need to ensure that network is integrated, convenient and easy for people to understand and use. Providing this kind of information and facilities for rail users will help achieve that.”

The installation of the screen is the final element of WYCA’s Wakefield Westgate Transport Hub scheme, which has also included a station totem and a new bus shelter for the free Wakefield FreeCityBus services.

WYCA is planning similar improvements at Brighouse and South Elmsall and is also working alongside local councils to improve and transport facilities at Morley, Normanton and Todmorden. A scheme in Heckmondwike has included the creation of a new, four-stand, off-street bus facility.
