Wakefield’s MYPs to tackle bullying in schools

The MYPs and their deputies will be launching the Wakefield Anti-Bullying Charter for high schools across the district next month.

Morgan Lois Binnersley, deputy MYP for Wakefield East, said:“This charter mark will benefit so many young people who have been bullied and who are being bullied and will in fact change some young people’s lives. This will help schools to develop to their full potential.”

The charter, which is backed by Wakefield Council, will be launched at Crofton Academy at 4.30pm on Wednesday, May 6. Young people, as well as school staff, can go along and take part in workshops and get information about bullying. The charter has five stages, which schools have to complete before progressing on to the next level. School will be awarded a bronze, silver, gold, platinum or diamond charter mark depending on what level they are at. Support will also be available for young people who are being bullied and those who are the bullies.

They have been supported by Coun Olivia Rowley, cabinet member for children and young people, who said: “The MYPs felt, after speaking to young people from schools across the district, that one of the main issues was bullying and they wanted to get teachers on board. Each school will concentrate on a particular level, where they complete tasks and offer support to stamp out bullying. They will gradually progress until the school is a bullying-free zone.”
