Wakefield’s Tour de Yorkshire stage will start near The Hepworth

Wakefield’s stage of the Tour de Yorkshire will start near The Hepworth on Sunday, May 3.

Stage 3 will commence at Barnsley Road, Agbrigg near the art gallery.

The 167km final stage will then head out of the city on the A61, taking in Manygates Centre, Sandal Castle and Newmillerdam before leaving the district at Woolley and continuing to Barnsley, Huddersfield and Leeds.

Wakefield Councillor Les Shaw said: “I am delighted that the Wakefield district is welcoming the first ever Tour de Yorkshire on May 3.

“Hosting the start of the third stage will be a fantastic opportunity to showcase the City on an international level and I am confident that we will see a real boost to tourism and the local economy across the district.

“This is going to be a prestigious race, involving some of the world’s most elite cycle teams and will be broadcast on national TV and throughout Europe. Let’s get behind this and use the race to put Wakefield on the map and enjoy a great day of cycling in our city.”

Welcome to Yorkshire confirmed the full route of the three-day race in a launch event today (Wednesday) in Bridlington.

Stage 1 on Friday, May 1 will start in Bridlington and finish in Scarborough 174km later.

Stage 2 on Saturday, May 2 will start in Selby and finish in York 174km later.

Stage 3 on Sunday, May 3 will start in Wakefield and finish in Roundhay Park Leeds 167km later.

The races will start around noon each day and you can watch anywhere along the route for free.

It is being organised by Welcome to Yorkshire and the Amaury Sport Organisation, with support from British Cycling and local authorities throughout the county.

The event will also be shown live on television in the UK and across Europe.

Amateur cyclists can also take part in the Tour de Yorkshire Ride - a mass participation bike ride - on the morning of the final day, Sunday, May 3.

Organised by Human Race, it will take place before the pro race and thousands are expected to take part.

Welcome to Yorkshire is also organising a month-long Tour de Yorkshire Festival from April 1 to May 3 to showcase the county’s rich and diverse cultural offerings.
