Wakefield's Unity Works bar to be re-opened temporarily

A short-term lease will bring the bar back into use a month after the arts and music venue on Westgate went into administration.

Crigglestone-based BB Events North Ltd, run by bar managers Tom Baker and Nathan Birkinshaw, will to re-open the bar as Miracle on Westgate.

They described their new venture as Wakefield’s “first full pop-up concept bar” and said they hoped to open on December 1.

They said: “We want to make sure, at the end of the month of December, we are all able to give Unity Works one final good-bye in the form of our New Year’s Eve party and give the old place the send off it deserves.”

Insolvency firm Begbies Traynor was called in after Unity House (Wakefield) Ltd, the community benefit society behind the venue, could not meet its day-to-day running costs.

The venue was immediately shut down and administrators have been trying to find a new occupant for the building.

The Establishment, a bar run by a separate company on the ground floor of the same building, was not affected by the administration.

Unity Works opened in 2014 after a project was launched to bring the disused building back into use after it stood empty for a decade.
