Warning after bogus workmen conned cash from eldery woman

Police are urging residents to be vigilant after a woman was defrauded by bogus workers in Pontefract.

Wakefield District CID are now investigating following an incident in which three men in a pick-up truck conned cash from a female resident.

A man approached the elderly female victim at her home in the Wakefield Road area on Saturday August 6 and offered to clear up her garden.

He then returned with another two men in the vehicles on the Saturday and Sunday.

On Monday August 8, she went to the bank to withdraw a substantial sum of money requested by the men.

They left with the cash and never returned, having done very little work for her.

The men were all described as white and one was believed to be in older than the others, possibly in his late 40s with grey hair.

Officers are urging residents to call them if they are approached by three white men in a Ford Transit and flat-bed pick up type truck who offer to carry out work for them.

Det Insp Tim Hunt at Wakefield CID, said: “Enquires are ongoing into this reported fraud and we are urging residents to be vigilant if approached by these men.

“If you are approached in similar circumstances please contact the police with details of the men and the vehicles they have been using.

Residents are under no obligation whatsoever to accept any form of service from a cold caller or not to let anyone into their homes.

“Anyone approached by these men in similar circumstances is asked to contact Wakefield CID on 101 or the independent Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
