We will never forget: Services to honour those who served

Tributes will be paid at commemorative services to remember the servicemen and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice serving their country.

Tomorrow (Friday) at 11am the nation will fall silent to observe the Royal British Legion’s two minute silence to mark Armistice Day.

Wakefield Council’s Armed Forces Champion, Coun Sandra Pickin, said: “The support is needed to help all those serviceman both past and present.

“I am pleased and proud for the support that has been shown, it is needed to remember those in the service.”

Children from Pinders Primary School will join the Mayor and Mayoress of Wakefield, Harry Ellis and Janet Ellis, at the war memorial located opposite the County Hall.

The Annual Festival of Remembrance will then take place at Wakefield Cathedral at 7pm.

And thousands are expected to attend events on Sunday for Remembrance Day.

In the city centre, there will be a parade from Wakefield Cathedral to the War Memorial off Rishworth Street at 10.40am.

There, members of the armed forces and the Royal British legion will lay wreaths.

In Normanton a parade will assemble at the Town Hall at 10.20am, before marching to the Cenotaph in Haw Hill Park for a service at 11.30am.

A further ceremony will take place at Altofts Cemetery at 11.45am.

The names of 30 soldiers, whose centenary deaths in the First World War have been marked this year, will be read out in a service at St Austin’s Catholic Church.

It will take place at 11am and a wreath will be laid on St Austin’s War Memorial.

At 11am members of the Horbury, Sitlington and Ossett Branch of the Royal British Legion will host a short service at the Cenotaph in Ossett.

There will also be a parade from Northfield Avenue in Horbury at 2pm, followed by a service at Trinity Church, Ossett.

A wreath laying ceremony will take place at the Newmillerdam War Memorial at 9.45am led by representatives of the Crigglestone Parish Council.

It will be followed by a service at St James’ Church at 10.30am.

And another wreath will then be laid by the chairman at the cemetery.

St James’ Church in Thornes will also host a Holy Communion as part of their own remembrance services at 9.15am.
