Word, words and more words at Lit Fest

Wakefield Lit Fest kicked off on September 18 with a launch event at The Orangery and an evening of poetry with Gillian Clarke, national poet of Wales.

For ten days, activities and performances took place across the city , providing literary enjoyment for both young and old.

Highlights included writer Zodwa Nyoni, whose new play ‘Nine Lives’ tells the reality of being an asylum seeker in modern Britain, Lynn Hill founder of the Clandestine Cake Club, who launched her new book ‘A Year of Cake, an open book day at Nostell Priory, and a festival finale with Ian McMillan who explored the meaning of Yorkshire – the theme of his new book ‘Neither Nowt Nor Summat’.

Fran Smith, co-director of Beam, which plans the festival, said: “Beam was delighted to be working with city and district partners new and old for the fourth Wakefield Lit Fest. Once again we were inspired by the passionate enthusiasm of all our festival partners and volunteers who joined us to celebrate the written and spoken word.”
