Work to start on £170k upgrade to gas mains in Wakefield

Engineers will start work on a £170,000 upgrade to ageing gas mains in the city next month.

Northern Gas Networks will replace around 300m of metallic gas mains with new durable plastic pipes.

The first phase of the work will start on Lower Warrengate to Vicarage Street on Monday, February 2.

Three way temporary traffic lights will be installed on Lower Warrengate while the work takes place.

Work will also be carried out on Vicarage Street to the junction of Sun Lane from Monday, March 2.

The final phase of the work will start from the junction of Sun Lane to Sun Lane on Monday, March 30.

The project is expected to take 11 weeks to complete.

Businesses in the area will remain open as usual.

Northern Gas Networks customer operations area manager John Pickering said: “We are holding a community drop in session at The Salvation Army Church on Vicarage Street South between 5pm and 7pm on Tuesday, January 20.

“We will be on hand to answer any questions or concerns from members of the public.

“We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this essential work may cause.”
