Working together for a happy marriage

Henry and Celia Wakefield were married at Holy Trinity Parish Church, Church Street, Ossett on November 6, 1965.

Mrs Wakefield said honesty and working together was the route to a long and happy marriage.

She said: “It’s about making decisions together and never telling fibs or lies. Always be honest, that’s it.”

Mr Wakefield, who worked for Tarmac at the Flushdyke concrete factory and supplying firm YPO, has been involved in organising the poppy appeal and remembrance services for the Horbury, Sitlington and Ossett branch of the Royal British Legion for many years.

Mrs Wakefield worked at Flushdyke Junior and Infant school until her retirement two years ago. She started as a lollipop lady and moved on to caretaking duties. They have also helped children from local schools with road safety.

The couple met while they living in Nottinghamshire and Mrs Wakefield moved up to West Yorkshire when her mother bought a kennel business in Flushdyke.

After a spell back in the East Midlands the couple, now married, moved back to Flushdyke, eventually settling in Woodbine Street, Ossett.

They do not have any big plans for today, as November is the busiest time for the RBL , they will return to Nottinghamshire for a party next month.

They have two children, Elizabeth and Susan, three grandchildren, Natalie, Andrew and Chelsea, and three great grandchildren, Oliver, Charlie and Paige.

Daughter Susan Walker said: “Like everyone they have their ups and downs but they are very loving and spend a lot of time together.”
