This year's marathon was hottest ever

Runners from across the district braved sweltering temperatures at this year's London Marathon '“ the hottest on record '“ to raise money for good causes.

Luke Patel, the grandson of Wakefield Trinity legend Keith Holliday, completed the challenge to fundraise for Alzheimer’s Research UK.

The cause is close to Luke’s heart having seen his grandad – the sixth most capped Trinity player – suffer from the illness before he died just over a year ago.

Luke, from Outwood, said: “I cannot put into words how hot it was.

“On the day I thought ‘I’m never doing it again’ but maybe further down the line I might do. My body is an absolute wreck.

“It was a really good experience, but it was so tough with the weather.”

His appeal has raised more than £3,000 so far.

Meanwhile a boxer from Ossett completed the race just two days after a fight.

Sherri-Li Walker, a member of White Rose Boxing Club in Wakefield, was running as part of this year’s Wakefield Hospice team in memory of her grandad.

She said: “My grandad was in the hospice when I was 10.

“All the people there were so nice.

“They were so friendly and made you feel part of a family.”

It was the first full marathon Sherri-Li, 24, had taken part in and boxing commitments meant she had very little time to hone her running.

Bethan Williams, 28, from Wakefield, completed the marathon in honour of her dad, Keith Williams, who was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.

She raised £3,000 for blood cancer charity DKMS.

Shed said: “My dad is my world and although we are extremely lucky he is able to manage his condition, I couldn’t help but think of the many others whose best chance at life is through a blood stem cell donor.

“Thanks to everyone who has supported me, I am thrilled and already have my next challenge in sight.”

And a team of 10 from Wakefield charity Penny Appeal, based at Cross Street, have raised more than £40,000 and are hoping their total will reach £50,000.

They were raising cash for the charity’s thirst relief programme, to build deep water wells in Africa.
