Yorkshire Day event in town centre

Pontefract town centre will be transformed to celebrate Yorkshire Day on Thursday August 1 with children’s activities and entertainment.

There will be a crafts and farmers’ market, dog show, penalty shoot out, flat cap throwing contest and rides in the town centre, along with activities at the Valley Gardens on Southgate, including birds of prey, wood and medieval workshops and children’s activities. Local shops will also be decorated to support the event.

Sgt Alan Studd, of Pontefract and Castleford neighbourhood policing team, who has helped organise the event along with local businesses, said: “This is all about raising the profile of Pontefract as a place to visit.

“We hope it will be a success and that it may become as popular as the liquorice festival.”

More details are available at the NPT’s Facebook page. Sgt Studd added: “We really want entries for our dog show, we’ll be looking at categories like ugliest dog, most ‘Yorkshire-like’ dog, it’s all a bit of fun like that.”
