Young man killed after being hit by taxi during a night out

A young man was killed after he was hit by a taxi on a night out.

Police have named the man as 22-year-old Benjamin Thomas Wapples from Hemsworth.

Mr Wapples was hit by a Toyota Avensis private hire vehicle at about 2.55am on Sunday, November 1.

He had been on a night out dressed as a fox character from the television programme The Mighty Boosh for Halloween with friends.

Mr Wapples got off a train at East Garforth railway station in Leeds when he was hit by the vehicle.

The incident happened on Aberford Road, near to the junction with Great North Road.

The taxi had been travelling along Aberford Road towards the M1.

Det Sgt Carole Greaves, of West Yorkshire Police Major Collision Enquiry Team, said: “Mr Wapples had been on a night out with friends in York.

“He would have been very noticeable as he was dressed in Halloween costume as a fox character from the television programme The Mighty Boosh.

“We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the circumstances around the collision or who saw Mr Wapples at any point between East Garforth railway station and the scene of the collision.”

The driver of the Toyota has been interviewed by officers.
