I would like to respond to a comment made on the Wakefield Express website asking why the council can’t provide free parking in town and city centre’s all year round.
We operate a wide range of parking facilities across the district, both on street and off street.
The income which comes from parking charges is used to offset the costs of maintaining the parking facilities. This includes things like staffing to ensure the car parks are used safely and security like CCTV monitoring and lighting. Without the income from parking charges we would not be able to provide our existing parking facilities which are vital to visitors, local businesses, and commuters across the district and essential for anyone who wants convenient, readily available and safe parking provisions.
