Letter - Hoping Hoffman gets an Oscar

2014 has it seems turned into some kind of annus horribilis as regards the sad and untimely passing of an array of film actors, perhaps none more so than that of Philip Seymour Hoffman, of whose demise we are poignantly reminded with the current showing of A Most Wanted Man.

Hoffman’s indisputable pre-eminence and unique acting craft in the leading role of LeCarre’s Gunter Bachmann are a vindication of all the previous praise heaped upon this stellar thespian’s career.

Only two actors have previously won Academy Awards posthumously; Peter Finch and Heath Ledger; if there be any artistic “justice” at all, Philip Seymour Hoffman has to be all but assured of such an apposite accolade at the 2015 Oscars.
