WAKEFIELD Harriers high jump star Martyn Bernard will aim to book his place on the plane to the forthcoming World Championships in South Korea when he competes in the UK Trials and Championships in Birmingham this weekend.
It’s just a year until the 2012 London Olympics begin and the former Outwood Grange pupil faces the biggest year of his athletics career so far, starting at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium.
The 26-year-old will compete against some of the best high jump aces from around the country, including Tom Parsons, on Sunday and will aim for a positive outcome as he targets a winning run of form ahead of next year’s Olympics.
Bernard has already twice reached 2.20 metres at events in European competition this year and will look to go even better in Birmingham with the World Championships in Daegu now a matter of weeks away.
The Harrier, who won a bronze medal at last year’s European Championships, was part of the ‘One Year To Go’ celebrations held at Trafalgar Square in London yesterday.
He takes part in the high jump finals at the UK Trials and Championships from 4.30pm on Sunday and will be keen to kick-start his preparations for London 2012 in winning fashion.
