The American-born midfielder, who moved to Wakefield as a youngster, returns to the Terriers for a second spell after coming through the club's youth academy.

He joined Huddersfield at Under-9 level after playing for clubs in the Wakefield district and rose through the ranks before making his professional debut in 2013.

Holmes made a further 25 appearances for Huddersfield before joining Scunthorpe United, then a League 1 side, in search of more regular first-team action.

The 26-year-old signed for Derby in the summer of 2018 and has over 100 Championship appearances to his name.

“Duane’s versatility is very important for us; he can play as a midfield eight, a 10 or on either wing," said Huddersfield head coach Carlos Corberan.

“He has enough quality and understanding of football to have an immediate impact in Championship games, plus his knowledge of this club and experience of the division will help his adaptation.

“We aim to receive the best from him in his second period at Huddersfield Town.”

Holmes has also been capped twice by the USA. He made his international debut against Jamaica in June 2019 and was set to take part in the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup but was forced to withdraw from the squad due to injury.
