Diouf at the double to deliver Leeds United win

LEEDS United climbed into the top 10 in the Npower Championship after a double from El Hadji Diouf helped them to a third win in eight days.

Diouf’s first-ever goals for the club and another first by on-loan Michael Tonge saw the Whites through to a 3-2 win over Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

All the goals came in the last half-hour after a goalless first period had seen Rodolph Austin go closest to opening the scoring with a well struck volley that was saved by home keeper Tom Heaton.

Luciano Becchio had an effort blocked and midweek goal scorer Aidan White went close while at the other end Paddy Kenny – back in goals after injury ruled him out of the Capital One Cup win against Everton – produced saves to deny Jon Stead and Albert Adomah.

A livelier second half saw Austin go within inches of opening the scoring with a header from a Diouf free-kick that rattled the crossbar.

Austin was denied by Heaton with another header shortly after, but Leeds finally broke the deadlock in the 64th minute when Diouf shot home in the box after being set up by a fine run and cross from youngster Sam Byram.

City hit back six minutes later through Adomah’s flying header as he met Richard Foster’s far post cross and the scene was set for an exciting finish with both teams looking for more.

Diouf hit the post direct from a corner and Tonge had an effort disallowed for a foul in the build-up before Diouf came up with his second goal of the game, following Becchio’s flick on.

It was effectively all over two minutes later when Tonge opened up space for a shot 25 yards out and beat Heaton with a superb strike.

It was not quite finished as City pulled a goal back late on as Byram appeared to divert an Adomah corner past his keeper, but Leeds saw the remainder out for a valuable three points.
