Last-gasp Keane denies Leeds United victory at Leicester

The Whites were looking set to end their run without an away win when they led through a Sam Byram goal going into the third minute of added time, but could not prevent Keane from heading home from a corner.

It was a disappointing end to another encouraging display from United, who could have had more than their one goal against a side that were looking to stay in the hunt for an automatic promotion spot, but they ultimately missed a chance to close the gap on the teams above them.

Leeds boss named an unchanged team for the fourth time in succession and saw Leicester create the first chance when Anthony Knockaert fired wide in the first minute.

United’s first chance came when Byram saw a header from a Stephen Warnock cross saved by former Leeds keeper Kasper Schmeichel.

The Leicester stopper was called upon to save from David Norris and Byram while United keeper Paddy Kenny tipped over a Chris Wood shot from the edge of the box and then saved a Knockaert free-kick.

United missed a good chance just before half-time when Norris met Byram’s cross only to send his shot just wide.

The Whites did break the deadlock seven minutes into the second half when Byram fired past Schmeichel after meeting a corner.

They had chances to stretch the lead through Norris, Ross McCormack and Paul Green, but Schmeichel was in fine form to keep his side in the contest.

Leicester threw everything into attack in the last 10 minutes, but the Leeds defence stood firm and it was the Whites that had another great opportunity as Norris was through one-on-one with Schmeichel only for the goalkeeper to keep his effort out. Norris’s follow-up was then cleared off the line by Keane.

Kenny seemed to have ensured the three points would be coming back to Leeds with a fine save to tip Andy King’s effort over and the hosts were getting desperate with Schmeichel coming up for the corner.

Warnock threw on centre-half Jason Pearce in an attempt to hold out, but it was to no avail as a further corner proved fruitful for Leicester and United were left to rue what might have been.
