All three of his new signings were given game time against the Northern Premier League Division One side with two of them, strikers Matt Smith and Noel Hunt, making scoring debuts.

Leeds fans turned out in numbers to see tall forward Smith score twice with further goals from Hunt, Dominic Poleon and Aidy White.

After the game McDermott said: “It was a worthwhile exercise for us and for Farsley, so we’re all pleased.

“I spoke to the players before and said to them that every time they play for Leeds United they put their reputations on the line and that’s how it is for the season really.

“Wherever you play, you play in front of a big support and they deserve to see the lads giving them everything which they did.

“I think the three new lads realised what this place is about and we need to get some momentum going.”

McDermott was happy to see his new strikers immediately off the mark and explained why £1 million capture Luke Murphy was restricted to only 15 minutes in the second half.

He added: “He’s fine, but he needs a bit more time. We’ll ease him back in. He’ll play 45 in Slovenia and we’ll work him back in and so he’s right for Brighton (first game of the Championship season).”
