Millers move for Pontefract’s ex-Leeds United midfielder

Midfielder Green was released by Leeds United when his two-year contract at Elland Road came to an end and finished the last season on loan at Ipswich Town, but has chosen Rotherham after becoming a free agent.

The Republic of Ireland International has agreed a two-year deal with the Millers.

“We are delighted to have signed Paul after several chats with his representatives,” said Rotherham boss Steve Evans.

“The lad had a magnificent finish to the season with Ipswich Town so it wasn’t a surprise to find there was significant interest in him, so we are very pleased to add him to our squad.

“I think the lure of Championship football, knowing what we are about as a football club and our magnificent stadium, all helped to convince him that this was the club for him.

“Paul is a full international, he has just returned from an end-of-season trip with Martin O’Neill’s Republic of Ireland, so he will be given a few more days to recuperate.

“He has been down here to finalise the deal and have his medical, but he won’t officially begin work with us until Monday next week.”

Green, who is the Millers’ 11th summer signing, started his career at Doncaster Rovers before going on to play for Derby County and Leeds.

He says it was the ambition of the club that persuaded him to sign for Rotherham.

He told the club website: “It is exciting times here with the stadium and promotions, there seems to be a real buzz around the place. I think if we can take that into next season then I think we can surprise a few teams.

“I met the gaffer last week and everything he said about the club was really exciting. I am delighted to be here and I think we can do well in The Championship.

“I am a big family man and it will be nice to get my family settled back in Pontefract so that was important to me.

“It is an honour to sign for Rotherham United; it is a club that is moving forward with big ambitions and after speaking with the Gaffer and his plans for the future it clearly is a great time to become involved.

“The manager doesn’t want Rotherham United to be fighting to stay up, he wants us to be pushing on and that was a big thing for me. You want to finish as high as you possibly can, and with the players who we have signed, coupled with the group of players already here we have a great chance.”
