United boss Brian McDermott is pleased to still be in the competition after admitting his side had not played well against Chesterfield.

He said: “We won and that’s important.

“We started well and it looked like it was going to be a good night for us - and it was a good night because we won and we’re in the next round.

“But Chesterfield played really well, they kept the ball better than us, and we lost our way in the game.

“Sometimes that happens and you have to dig in and get a result. You have to get a winning habit.

“We went behind again at home and that’s something we have to address but the result is everything in a cup game. We got over the line in the end.”

McDermott, meanwhile, has confirmed that two bids have been rejected for striker Ross McCormack.

Blackpool and Middlesbrough are believed to have made offers for the Scotland international, but Leeds are not interested in doing a deal for their Scottish international.

McDermott said: “He’s staying. I want him to stay at Leeds, he wants to stay at Leeds and there’s a couple of offers that the club have knocked back. That’s the story. There’s no more to it.

“You can see what he brings to us with his calmness on the ball. You could see that on Saturday against Brighton.

“In my first game in charge he created two goals for Luke Varney. He’s a good lad and he loves it at Leeds. Why would he want to go?”
