Athletic got this Premiership League Two fixture off to a positive start and striker Mike Corr force a good stop from the visiting goalkeeper before midfielder Martin Inman saw his effort hit the post then being cleared to safety.

The home side piled up more pressure and took a deserved 1-0 lead when Inman found the target from a superbly struck free-kick, giving the keeper no chance.

However, this lead was short lived as the visitors equalised following a solo goal from Hemsall which saw him glide past three players before finding the target.

Minutes later, Boons’ Ryan Dobson set up Hempsall, who was brought down. But he got up to convert the resultant spot kick to give the visitors a slim 2-1 half-time lead.

In the second half, Boons FC produced a much more dominant performance and saw two early, quality goals complete Athletic’s misery with Hempsall going on to complete his hat-trick before a youthful Sam Clements added to his side’s tally.

Athletic responded with a swathe of changes, which saw James Lindsay, Patrick Flowers, Alistar Drury and Joe Parr come on and try and to influence the game, but a late flurry saw James Lindsay hitting the visitors’ crossbar before Patrick Flowers saw his effort skimming off the post.

However, Boons’ defence stood up well to all the pressure before securing a well-deserved victory.

The L&R Metcalfe man-of-the-match award for Wakefield Athletic was shared by Will Pickard, Alistair Hill and Martin Inman.

In Championship One, two goals in each half helped Wakefield Athletic B to a deserved but hard-fought 4-2 victory at rugged Railway Inn.

Both sides threatened in the early exchanges before a slip in the visitors’ box presented home striker Paul Heselntine with a chance he converted from close range to give Railway Inn a 1-0 lead.

Athletic fought back and persistent play from Danny Young forced a block on the line by the home goalkeeper’s outstreched leg, recovering to parry the rebound effort from Sekiou Merega but could do little to stop a Kieran Young finding the target from the loose ball to grab his sides equaliser and his 15th goal of the season.

In the 32nd minute, headers from Kyle Clarke and Dom Merrills helped keep the pressure on in the Railway danger area before Merega pounced to stab the ball home from close range to give his side a 2-1 lead.

Six minutes into the second half, a cros-field pass by Danny Jones found full-back Craig Jedynak whose intelligent pass with the outside of his boot engineered a break by Kane Whitaker, who set up Danny Young.

He ran clear to notch his 41st goal of the season with a low piledriver on target – a fine team goal to make it 3-1.

Visiting goalkeeper, Karl Reynolds, came to his side’s rescue with a brave point-blank save, but he could do little to deny the home side from pulling a goal back through Tommy Scott – a splendid individual effort to reduce the areas to a single-goal margin in the 71st minute.

A late charge by Athletic saw brothers Danny and Kieran Young hit the home side’s woodwork before a surging run from Whitaker ended with a clever pass to Merega, who found target for the second time in the game to make it 4-2. The goal also notched another milestone for Athletic as it was his 100th league and cup goal this season – in their 35 anniversary.

The WDH man of the match award for Wakefield Athletic B’was shared by Kane Whitaker, Danny Jones and Kyle Clarke.
