WAKEFIELD Harrier Annabel Mason produced a fitting end to a memorable year with a brilliant run in the 19th Daleside Auld Lang Syne fell race, in Howarth, on New Year’s Eve.
The 16 year-old faced driving rain and wind in her debut senior outing on the six-mile course but once again produced a display that belied her age, finishing as the first female finisher and a superb 11th overall.
Mason ran 47 minutes 58 seconds to beat nearest female rival and three-time winner Olivia Walwyn-Bush in a quality field that was headed by London Olympics bronze medal-winning triathlete Jonathan Brownlee.
The Wakefield starlet crossed the line almost a minute ahead of Britain’s senior mountain running champion Victoria Wilkinson.
Harriers’ Matthew O’Connor was another impressive performer, taking 15th overall and second in the male U18s rankings with a time of 48:56.
