METRONOMIC kicking from skipper Greg Wood helped Sandal defeat Percy Park 29-20 in National 3 North on Saturday.
Wood’s first penalty success came within two minutes of the kick-off when Park were caught offside by the fast-starting hosts.
Opposite number Ashley Smith replied with three points for the visitors and the two fly-halves continued their penalty exchange in the opening 25 minutes, after which Sandal led 12-6.
The first try of the game went Sandal’s way, James Stewart breaking forward to put Tom Coad over for a score improved by Wood.
Sandal’s 19-6 half-time lead was cut to six points soon after the resumption when Ali Blair powered through the home defence to touch-down and Smith added the goal.
Rob Norbury crossed on the left wing, Wood converting, to make it 26-13 and Wood extended the home advantage to 29-13 with another penalty two minutes later.
Wood’s perfect record came to an end with a missed penalty with 10 minutes remaining and although Park finished with a flourish, Johnny Ward touching-down and Smith drop-kicking the conversion from the touchline, it was too little, too late.
