England head coach Stuart Lancaster returned to his roots to officially open new pitches at Sandal RUFC.
Lancaster, a former PE teacher at Kettlethorpe High School and Wakefield RFC player, was the special guest at Milnthorpe Green yesterday, Sunday, for the official opening of two new pitches at the club.
Lancaster said: “You [Sandal RUFC] should be proud of what you have done in getting this money raised for the new pitches.”
With Lancaster due to lead England’s challenge in the World Cup in a year’s time, he highlighted how important the grassroots game is to him.
He said: “People talk about England and the influence we can have in winning the World Cup. The biggest thing we can do is influence grassroots rugby.
“I will do my very best to win the World Cup, not for England but for the grassroots game, because if we do that, the game in this country will go through the roof and that will give me the greatest pleasure.”
