Wakefield golf professional Adrian Ambler has been rewarded for a superb year on the course by being named PGA North Region captain.

The 42-year-old, who won both the PGA North Region and Yorkshire Order of Merit titles last year, will be officially presented with his captain’s blazer at Normanton Golf Club, in Stanley, later this month.

The honour comes on the back of the Low Laithes golfer’s best year on the course so far, which culminated in a place in the end-of-season PGA Play-Offs in Turkey in December.

The Thornes golfer was nominated for the role by PGA North Region chairman Jim Pape and Yorkshire PGA chairman Martin Heggie.

He received the news during the PGA Yorkshire Winter Pro Am in Portugal in January and he cannot wait to get started.

“It’s a fantastic honour for me and the chance to captain the North Region was a chance I couldn’t turn down,” he said.

“The role is one that doesn’t come around often, it’s rotated around the North Region areas such as Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire.

“Luckily Yorkshire’s turn came on the back of me having a great year, but it’s not an honour that’s awarded on results alone.

“My success last year won’t have hindered my chances but first and foremost they select a captain on experience and knowledge of the area.

“There won’t be many changes out on the course for me, the main changes will be off the course, attending meetings, AGMs and things like that.”

He added: “It’s not something I’ve thought about doing before but I’m really proud to be captain and I’m looking forward to the year ahead”.

Ambler will need to be at the top of his game if he is to match last year’s success.

His aim is to return to the PGA Play-Offs, something that requires a top-three finish in the North Order of Merit.

To help, Ambler is looking for a sponsor to help cover costs for tournament entries, travel and accommodation after seeing his three-year deal with DP Publicity come to an end.

“I had three great years with David Pitts and DP Publicity,” said Ambler.

“It would be great to get someone else on board. Sponsorship helps relieve the pressure on my golf and helps me flourish on the course.”
